Investors and Markets: Portfolio Choices, Asset Prices, and Investment Advice (Princeton Lectures in Finance)

William F. Sharpe "Investors and Markets: Portfolio Choices, Asset Prices, and Investment Advice (Princeton Lectures in Finance)"
Princeton University Press | 2006-10-02 | ISBN: 0691128421 | 232 pages | PDF | 1 MB

In Investors and Markets, Nobel Prize-winning financial economist William Sharpe shows that investment professionals cannot make good portfolio choices unless they understand the determinants of asset prices. But until now asset-price analysis has largely been inaccessible to everyone except PhDs in financial economics. In this book, Sharpe changes that by setting out his state-of-the-art approach to asset pricing in a nonmathematical form that will be comprehensible to a broad range of investment professionals, including investment advisors, money managers, and financial analysts. Bridging the gap between the best financial theory and investment practice, Investors and Markets will help investment professionals make better portfolio choices by being smarter about asset prices.

Based on Sharpe's Princeton Lectures in Finance, Investors and Markets presents a method of analyzing asset prices that accounts for the real behavior of investors. Sharpe makes this technique accessible through a new, one-of-a-kind computer program that enables users to create virtual markets, setting the starting conditions and then allowing trading until equilibrium is reached and trading stops. Program users can then analyze the final portfolios and asset prices, see expected returns, and measure risk.

In addition to popularizing the most sophisticated form of asset-price analysis, Investors and Markets summarizes much of Sharpe's most important previous work and reflects a lifetime of thinking about investing by one of the leading minds in financial economics. Any serious investment professional will benefit from Sharpe's unique insights.

One Economics, Many Recipes: Globalization, Institutions, and Economic Growth

Dani Rodrik "One Economics, Many Recipes: Globalization, Institutions, and Economic Growth"
Princeton University Press | 2007-10-28 | ISBN: 0691129517 | 278 pages | PDF | 1,8 MB

In One Economics, Many Recipes, leading economist Dani Rodrik argues that neither globalizers nor antiglobalizers have got it right. While economic globalization can be a boon for countries that are trying to dig out of poverty, success usually requires following policies that are tailored to local economic and political realities rather than obeying the dictates of the international globalization establishment. A definitive statement of Rodrik's original and influential perspective on economic growth and globalization, One Economics, Many Recipes shows how successful countries craft their own unique strategies—and what other countries can learn from them.

To most proglobalizers, globalization is a source of economic salvation for developing nations, and to fully benefit from it nations must follow a universal set of rules designed by organizations such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization and enforced by international investors and capital markets. But to most antiglobalizers, such global rules spell nothing but trouble, and the more poor nations shield themselves from them, the better off they are. Rodrik rejects the simplifications of both sides, showing that poor countries get rich not by copying what Washington technocrats preach or what others have done, but by overcoming their own highly specific constraints. And, far from conflicting with economic science, this is exactly what good economics teaches.

The Econometrics of Individual Risk: Credit, Insurance, and Marketing

Christian Gourieroux, Joann Jasiak "The Econometrics of Individual Risk: Credit, Insurance, and Marketing"
Princeton University Press | 2007-01-02 | ISBN: 0691120668 | 256 pages | PDF | 1,7 MB

The individual risks faced by banks, insurers, and marketers are less well understood than aggregate risks such as market-price changes. But the risks incurred or carried by individual people, companies, insurance policies, or credit agreements can be just as devastating as macroevents such as share-price fluctuations. A comprehensive introduction, The Econometrics of Individual Risk is the first book to provide a complete econometric methodology for quantifying and managing this underappreciated but important variety of risk. The book presents a course in the econometric theory of individual risk illustrated by empirical examples. And, unlike other texts, it is focused entirely on solving the actual individual risk problems businesses confront today.

Christian Gourieroux and Joann Jasiak emphasize the microeconometric aspect of risk analysis by extensively discussing practical problems such as retail credit scoring, credit card transaction dynamics, and profit maximization in promotional mailing. They address regulatory issues in sections on computing the minimum capital reserve for coverage of potential losses, and on the credit-risk measure CreditVar.

The book will interest graduate students in economics, business, finance, and actuarial studies, as well as actuaries and financial analysts.

Women in African Colonial Histories

Women in African Colonial Histories
Publisher: Indiana University Press | 2002-04-01 | ISBN: 0253340470 | JPG | 6 pages | 0.88 MB

How did African women negotiate the complex political, economic, and social forces of colonialism in their daily lives? How did they make meaningful lives for themselves in a world that challenged fundamental notions of work, sexuality, marriage, motherhood, and family? By considering the lives of ordinary African women - farmers, queen-mothers, midwives, urban-dwellers, migrants, and political leaders - in the context of particular colonial conditions at specific places and times, Women in African Colonial Histories challenges the notion of a homogeneous "African women's experience." While recognising the inherent violence and brutality of the colonial encounter, the thirteen essays in this lively anthology show that African women were not simply the hapless victims of European political rule. Innovative use of primary sources, including life histories, oral narratives, court cases, newspapers, colonial archives, and physical evidence, attests to the diversity of African women's lives and reveals them as active agents whose experiences defy static representation. Readers at all levels will find this an important contribution to ongoing debates in African women's history and African colonial history.

A Guide to Psychological Debriefing: Managing Emotional Decompression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

A Guide to Psychological Debriefing: Managing Emotional Decompression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Jessica Kingsley Publishers | 2007 | ISBN: 184310492X | Pages: 136 | PDF | 1.29 MB

Traumatic events strike unexpectedly and turn everyday experiences upside down. Frequently, people suffering such trauma cannot shake the experience and develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Psychological debriefing (PD) is a widely practised process used as an intervention for treating people who have been exposed to trauma. It allows people who have been exposed to trauma to re-examine the traumatic event in a safe and controlled environment, and reduces the risks of developing PTSD. This book is a practical introduction to PTSD and psychological debriefing, and offers an enhanced model of PD which the author terms 'Emotional Decompression'. Structured like a deep-sea dive, which has to include carefully planned safety stops on the way back to the surface to avoid getting 'the bends', this model provides time frames for how long to spend at various stages of the PD process, and when to stop for discussions and explanations. The focus is on aiding recovery from this 'invisible injury' over carefully structured time. The book presents a range of recovery models, from the 'simple' models developed by Williams and Horowitz to the more complex 'Snakes and Ladders' model developed by the author. Appendices include an essay by one of the world's leading exponents of psychological debriefing, Atle Dyregrov, as well as case studies of debriefs completed by the author, including that of a survivor of the July 7th bombings in London. "A Guide to Psychological Debriefing" is an essential book for health practitioners, counsellors, psychologists and professionals working with clients suffering from PTSD, as well as students.

Garfield Comics in full color from 1978 - 2009 (A Total of 31 Years!)

Garfield Comics in Full Color from 1978 - 2009 (31 Years)
1978 - 2009 | Jim Davis | ~365 GIF | ~10-18 MB each

Garfield is a daily-syndicated comic strip created by Jim Davis. Published since June 19, 1978, it chronicles the life of the title character, the cat Garfield (named for Davis' grandfather); his owner, Jon Arbuckle; and the dog, Odie. As of 2007, it is syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals and currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the world's most widely syndicated comic strip.

Though never mentioned in print, Garfield is set in Muncie, Indiana, according to the television special Garfield Goes Hollywood. Common themes in the strip include Garfield's laziness, obsessive eating, and hate of Mondays and diets. The strip's focus is mostly on the interactions among Garfield, Jon, and Odie; recurring minor characters appear as well.

Originally created with the intentions to "come up with a good, marketable character", Garfield has become commercially successful, with merchandise earning $750 million to $1 billion annually. In addition to the various merchandise and commercial tie-ins, the strip has spawned several animated television specials, two animated television series, two theatrical feature-length live-action films and three CGI animated direct-to-video movies. Part of the strip's broad appeal is due to its lack of social or political commentary; though this was Davis's original intention, he also admitted that his "grasp of politics isn't strong"

This post contains all the comic strip published from June 19, 1978 to 1st Week of Feb,2009 in full color. The files are indexed per year for easier downloading. All the strips are in full color. Even the ones published in 1978 were re-released in color and this post contains them.

Lamed Shapiro - The Cross and Other Jewish Stories

Lamed Shapiro - The Cross and Other Jewish Stories
Yale University Press | 2007 | ISBN: 0300110693 | Pages: 272 | PDF | 1.08 MB

Lamed Shapiro (1878-1948) was the author of groundbreaking and controversial short stories, novellas, and essays. Himself a tragic figure, Shapiro led a life marked by frequent ocean crossings, alcoholism, and failed ventures, yet his writings are models of precision, psychological insight, and daring.
Shapiro focuses intently on the nature of violence: the mob violence of pogroms committed against Jews; the traumatic aftereffects of rape, murder, and powerlessness; the murderous event that transforms the innocent child into witness and the rabbi's son into agitator. Within a society on the move, Shapiro's refugees from the shtetl and the traditional way of life are in desperate search of food, shelter, love, and things of beauty. Remarkably, and against all odds, they sometimes find what they are looking for. More often than not, the climax of their lives is an experience of ineffable terror.
This collection also reveals Lamed Shapiro as an American master. His writings depict the Old World struggling with the New, extremes of human behavior combined with the pursuit of normal happiness. Through the perceptions of a remarkable gallery of men, women, children—of even animals and plants—Shapiro successfully reclaimed the lost world of the shtetl as he negotiated East Broadway and the Bronx, Union Square, and vaudeville.
Both in his life and in his unforgettable writings, Lamed Shapiro personifies the struggle of a modern Jewish artist in search of an always elusive home.

Fundamental Tax Reform: Issues, Choices, and Implications

Fundamental Tax Reform: Issues, Choices, and Implications
The MIT Press | 2008 | ISBN: 0262042479 | Pages: 546 | PDF | 1.80 MB

Reform of the federal income tax system has become a perennial item on the domestic policy agenda of the United States, although there is considerable uncertainty over specifics. Indeed the recent report of the President's Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform recommended not one but two divergent policy directions (and included extensive discussion of a third). In Fundamental Tax Reform, top experts in tax policy discuss a wide range of issues raised by the prospect of significant tax reform, identifying the most critical questions and considering whether the answers are known, unknown—or unknowable.

The debates over tax reform usually concern the advantages and disadvantages of income-based taxation as opposed to any of the several alternative forms of consumption-based taxation. The book opens with chapters that discuss the strengths, weaknesses, and political feasibility of these options. Other chapters consider the effects of tax reforms on businesses, especially their investment behavior, and include a discussion of possible problems in any transition to a consumption-based tax; international taxation issues arising in an era of globalization; and individual behavioral response to tax reform, including a view of the topic from the perspective of the relatively new field of behavioral economics.

Still Here With Me: Teenagers And Children on Losing a Parent

Suzanne Sjoqvist, Margaret Myers, "Still Here With Me"
Publisher: Jessica Kingsley Publishers | 2007-01-15 | ISBN 1843105012 | PDF | 189 pages | 4.7 MB

Making sense of the loss of a close loved one is difficult especially for children suffering the loss whether or not expected of a parent. I bought this book because I wanted to have insight into what my daughters (age 6 and 12) are experiencing with the recent unexpected loss of my husband (their father). I wanted to be able to understand what they are feeling in order to help them with my best abilities. What I learned, is that kids grieve similarly regardless of method of death and that the key is to be supportive and provide a means if expression of their grief. Even children in rough circumstances recuperated and adapted with appropriate support.

Additionally, I learned that this book contains the expressions of Swedish Children and I commend the Sweds for being more supportive socially, able to have more resources available, and for their ability to discuss these issues openly and with finesse.

I bought several books and this one truly touches on the exact interactions and encounters seen and to be expected whereas, some American authors who disappointingly didn't have any professional experience or backing to their work lacked flow and cohesion. This may be due to the fact that culturally Americans are inept when it comes to grieving and talking about death. People seem to view those who talk about these subjects as diseased lepors.

Bahaa E. A. Saleh: Fundamentals of Photonics (Repost)

Fundamentals of Photonics
Wiley-Interscience | August 15, 1991 | ISBN 0471839655 | PDF | 992 pages | 11.5 MB

In recent years, photonics has found increasing applications in such areas as communications, signal processing, computing, sensing, display, printing, and energy transport. Now, Fundamentals of Photonics is the first self-contained introductory-level textbook to offer a thorough survey of this rapidly expanding area of engineering and applied physics. Featuring a logical blend of theory and applications, coverage includes detailed accounts of the primary theories of light, including ray optics, wave optics, electromagnetic optics, and photon optics, as well as the interaction of light with matter, and the theory of semiconductor materials and their optical properties.

Presented at increasing levels of complexity, these sections serve as building blocks for the treatment of more advanced topics, such as Fourier optics and holography, guidedwave and fiber optics, photon sources and detectors, electro-optic and acousto-optic devices, nonlinear optical devices, fiber-optic communications, and photonic switching and computing. Included are such vital topics as:

* Generation of coherent light by lasers, and incoherent light by luminescence sources such as light-emitting diodes
* Transmission of light through optical components (lenses, apertures, and imaging systems), waveguides, and fibers
* Modulation, switching, and scanning of light through the use of electrically, acoustically, and optically controlled devices
* Amplification and frequency conversion of light by the use of wave interactions in nonlinear materials Detection of light by means of semiconductor photodetectors

Each chapter contains summaries, highlighted equations, problem sets and exercises, and selected reading lists. Examples of real systems are included to emphasize the concepts governing applications of current interest, and appendices summarize the properties of one- and two-dimensional Fourier transforms, linear-systems theory, and modes of linear systems.

An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

The Marriage of Sense and Soul: Integrating Science and Religion

Ken Wilber, "The Marriage of Sense and Soul: Integrating Science and Religion"
Random House | 1998-03-24 | ISBN: 0375500545 | 225 pages | PDF | 1,6 MB

There is arguably no more critical and pressing topic than the relation of science and religion in the modern world. Science has given us the methods for discovering truth, while religion remains the single greatest force for generating meaning. Yet the two are seen as mutually exclusive, with wrenching consequences for humanity. In The Marriage of Sense and Soul, one of today's most important philosophers brilliantly articulates how we might begin to think about science and religion in ways that allow for their reconciliation and union, on terms that will be acceptable to both camps.
Ken Wilber is widely acclaimed as the foremost thinker in integrating Western psychology and the Eastern spiritual traditions. His many books have reached across disciplines and synthesized the teachings of religion, psychology, physics, mysticism, sociology, and anthropology, earning him a devoted international following. The Marriage of Sense and Soul is his most accessible work yet, aimed at guiding a general audience to the mutual accord between the spiritual, subjective world of ancient wisdom and the objective, empirical world of modern knowledge.
Wilber clearly and succinctly explores the schism between science and religion, and the impact of this "philosophical Cold War" on the fate of humanity. He systematically reviews previous attempts at integration, explaining why romantic, idealistic, and postmodern theories failed. And he demonstrates how science is compatible with certain deep features common to all of the world's major religious traditions. In pointing the way to a union between truth and meaning, Ken Wilber has created an elegant and accessible book that is breathtaking in its scope.

Wire Ropes: Tension, Endurance, Reliability

K. Feyrer, "Wire Ropes: Tension, Endurance, Reliability"
Springer | 2007-04-19 | ISBN: 3540338217 | 322 pages | PDF | 7,1 MB

The main concern of this book is to present the methods used to calculate the most important rope quantities as well as to explain how they are applied by means of a large number of calculations as examples. The book, based on the most important chapters of the German book "Drahtseile", has been kept up to date and the recent developments have been taken into account. The first section of the book deals with the different types of wire rope and their component parts. The second section looks into the effects of wire ropes under tensile forces (stationary ropes). The third section takes a look at the wire ropes under bending and tensile force (running ropes).

This book is an indispendable source for everybody working with wire ropes - the construction engineers, operators and supervisors of machines and installations running on wire ropes.

Organisational Transformation in the Russian Oil Industry (New Horizons in International Business Series)

Sarah Dixon, "Organisational Transformation in the Russian Oil Industry (New Horizons in International Business Series)"
Edward Elgar Publishing | 2008-12-30 | ISBN: 1847205925 | 264 pages | PDF | 4,9 MB

Here the example of the Russian oil industry in the context of transition from a planned to a market economy is used to develop a three-stage framework for organisational transformation. Four longitudinal case studies of Russian oil companies are drawn upon to explain the process of organisational transformation. The book highlights how and why this process differs between companies within the same industry, explores the complexity of the change process and discusses the importance of the top management team. The links between organisational learning, dynamic capabilities and the implementation of change are analysed. An interesting insight into the constraints and enablers of organisational change is also provided. The framework developed from this study can be successfully applied to other organisations wishing to bring about organisational change. Integrating several perspectives, including a resource-based view, organisational learning, dynamic capabilities and top management team theory, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of business and management, international business and organisational behaviour.

Java In A Nutshell, 5th Edition (Repost)

Java In A Nutshell, 5th Edition (Repost)
O'Reilly Media | 2005 | ISBN: 0596007736 | Pages: 1224 | CHM | 3.41 MB

With more than 700,000 copies sold to date, Java in a Nutshell from O'Reilly is clearly the favorite resource amongst the legion of developers and programmers using Java technology. And now, with the release of the 5.0 version of Java, O'Reilly has given the book that defined the "in a Nutshell" category another impressive tune-up.
In this latest revision, readers will find Java in a Nutshell, 5th Edition, does more than just cover the extensive changes implicit in 5.0, the newest version of Java. It's undergone a complete makeover--in scope, size, and type of coverage--in order to more closely meet the needs of the modern Java programmer.
To wit, Java in a Nutshell, 5th Edition now places less emphasis on coming to Java from C and C++, and adds more discussion on tools and frameworks. It also offers new code examples to illustrate the working of APIs, and, of course, extensive coverage of Java 5.0. But faithful readers take comfort: it still hasn't lost any of its core elements that made it such a classic to begin with.
This handy reference gets right to the heart of the program with an accelerated introduction to the Java programming language and its key APIs--ideal for developers wishing to start writing code right away. And, as was the case in previous editions, Java in a Nutshell, 5th Edition is once again chock-full of poignant tips, techniques, examples, and practical advice. For as long as Java has existed, Java in a Nutshell has helped developers maximize the capabilities of the program's newest versions. And this latest edition is no different.

The Persona Lifecycle : Keeping People in Mind Throughout Product Design

The Persona Lifecycle : Keeping People in Mind Throughout Product Design
Morgan Kaufmann | 2006 | ISBN: 0125662513 | Pages: 744 | PDF | 12.83 MB

If you design and develop products for people, this book is for you. The Persona Lifecycle addresses the how of creating effective personas and using those personas to design products that people love. It doesnt just describe the value of personas; it offers detailed techniques and tools related to planning, creating, communicating, and using personas to create great product designs. Moreover, it provides rich examples, samples, and illustrations to imitate and model. Perhaps most importantly, it positions personas not as a panacea, but as a method used to complement other user-centered design (UCD) techniques including scenario-based design, cognitive walkthroughs and user testing.

John Pruitt is the User Research Manager for the Tablet & Mobile PC Division at Microsoft Corporation. Tamara Adlin is a Customer Experience Manager at Amazon.com. For the past six years, John and Tamara have been researching and using personas, leading workshops, and teaching courses at professional conferences and universities. They developed the Persona Lifecycle model to communicate the value and practical application of personas to product design and development professionals.

Features
* Presentation and discussion of the complete lifecycle of personas, to guide the designer at each stage of product development.
* A running case study with rich examples and samples that demonstrate how personas can be used in building a product end-to-end.

Tissue Mechanics

Stephen C. Cowin, Stephen B. Doty, "Tissue Mechanics"
Springer | 2006-10-25 | ISBN: 0387368256 | 682 pages | PDF | 30 MB

Tissue Mechanics, Second Edition is about the mechanics of tissues for use at the advanced undergraduate level or above. Tissues transmit mechanical loads just like bridges and building structures. Not only do they transmit loads, but also they adapt their own structures so that the structures will transmit the mechanical loads more effectively, unlike bridges and building structures. The structures of living tissues are continually changing due to growth and response to the tissue environment, including the mechanical environment. The objective of this text is to describe the nature of the composite components of a tissue, the cellular processes that produce these constituents, the assembly of the constituents into a hierarchical structure, and the behavior of the tissue’s composite structure in the adaptation to its mechanical environment. A tissue’s mechanical environment is the history of mechanical loading experienced by the tissue in some reference time period, like a day.

The most important features of the textbook are its middle level, neither too advanced nor too elementary, its fresh perspective on older material issues, and the inclusion of new research results carefully crafted onto this intermediate base of mechanics.

Key Features:

An introductory chapter on the structure of tissues and the fascinating unresolved problems concerning how biological tissues are formed and constructed.

Example problems to provide the student with hands-on experience with concepts

Extensive appendices and tutorial materials on new developments including expanded treatment of ceramic materials and implants

Detailed references for further reading

Leading Global Projects

Robert T. Moran, William Youngdahl, "Leading Global Projects"
Butterworth-Heinemann | 2008-06-05 | ISBN: 0750682469 | 272 pages | PDF | 1,2 MB

This book is a must-read for anyone responsible for projects and initiatives that span functional and geographical divides. Authors Moran and Youngdahl bring extensive experience and learning from industry practice to present a clear and straightforward treatment of the leadership skills and knowledge required to lead projects that are global in nature. They have written the first book of its kind to address the three essential skills of global project leaders - strategic project management, project leadership, and cross-cultural leadership.

The authors argue that global project leadership is an essential skill in our project-based world and that we are all either intentional or accidental project leaders. Intentional project leaders pursue formal project management education and even certification whereas accidental project leaders find themselves leading global project and initiatives as a result of a special assignment or promotion. Moran and Youndahl have found that the vast majority of global projects leaders fall into the accidental category and have written the book to be accessible to those who have not necessarily pursued formal project management education. Experienced intentional project managers can skip the single chapter on project management fundamentals to move to the more advanced chapters addressing topics such as influencing without formal authority across functional and geographical boundaries and leading global projects at the edge of crisis.

The only book that combines themes of strategic project management, project leadership and cross-cultural leadership

Rich with examples and stories to illustrate key skills and knowledge required to lead global projects

*Only book to focus on leadership and cross-cultural skills in global project management
*Robert Moran is well-known author in these fields
*Book is designed for easy use in executive education courses

Learning Java (REPOST)

Patrick Niemeyer, Jonathan Knudsen, "Learning Java"
O'Reilly Media, Inc. | 2005-05-20 | ISBN: 0596008732 | 976 pages | CHM | 6.1 MB

Version 5.0 of the Java 2 Standard Edition SDK is the most important upgrade since Java first appeared a decade ago. With Java 5.0, you'll not only find substantial changes in the platform, but to the language itself-something that developers of Java took five years to complete. The main goal of Java 5.0 is to make it easier for you to develop safe, powerful code, but none of these improvements makes Java any easier to learn, even if you've programmed with Java for years. And that means our bestselling hands-on tutorial takes on even greater significance. Learning Java is the most widely sought introduction to the programming language that's changed the way we think about computing. Our updated third edition takes an objective, no-nonsense approach to the new features in Java 5.0, some of which are drastically different from the way things were done in any previous versions. The most essential change is the addition of "generics", a feature that allows developers to write, test, and deploy code once, and then reuse the code again and again for different data types. The beauty of generics is that more problems will be caught during development, and Learning Java will show you exactly how it's done. Java 5.0 also adds more than 1,000 new classes to the Java library. That means 1,000 new things you can do without having to program it in yourself. That's a huge change. With our book's practical examples, you'll come up to speed quickly on this and other new features such as loops and threads. The new edition also includes an introduction to Eclipse, the open source IDE that is growing in popularity. Learning Java, 3rd Edition addresses all of the important uses of Java, such as web applications, servlets, and XML that are increasingly driving enterprise applications. The accompanying CD includes the Java 5.0 SDK for Windows, Linux, and Solaris, plus the Eclipse IDE, the NetBeans IDE, and the many example programs from the book.

Don't Know Much About History: Everything You Need to Know About American History but Never Learned

Don't Know Much About History: Everything You Need to Know About American History but Never Learned
HarperCollins | 2003 | ISBN: 0060083816 | Pages: 704 | PDF | 2.24 MB

A new, completely revised, expanded and updated edition of the million-selling New York Times bestseller that launched the entire Don't Know Much About® series

When Don't Know Much About® History first appeared thirteen years ago, it created a sensation. With humor, wit, great stories, and a trademark conversational style, the book brought Americans a fresh new take on history. Shattering myths and vividly bringing the past to life, it spent thirty-five consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Davis proved that Americans don't hate history -- they just hate the dull textbook version they were force-fed in school. The book became an instant classic, an "anti -textbook" that has sold more than 1.3 million copies.

In his irreverent and popular question-and- answer style, Davis now returns with a completely revised edition that brings history right up to the moment -- covering such topics as the end of the Cold War, Clinton's impeachment, the bizarre election of 2000, and the events that led to September 11.

Incorporating new research and discoveries, Davis also updates and expands on such long-standing American controversies as the Jefferson-Hemings affair, the Alger Hiss trial, and the Rosenberg spy case. And he includes an expanded "civics lesson" that examines some of America's hottest social and political issues, such as the death penalty, gun control, and school prayer.

For history buffs and history-phobes alike, longtime fans who need a refresher course, and for a new generation of Americans who are still in the dark about America's past, Davis proves once more why People magazine said, "Reading him is like returning to the classroom of the best teacher you ever had."

Poker for Dummies

Poker for Dummies By Richard D. Harroch,&nbspLou Krieger
Publisher: For Dummies 2000 | 298 Pages | ISBN: 0764552325 | PDF | 12.8 MB

Poker is America’s national card game, and its popularity continues to grow. Nationwide, you can find a game in progress everywhere. If you want to play, you can find poker games on replicas of 19th century riverboats or on Native American tribal lands. You can play poker at home with the family or online with opponents from around the world. Like bowling and billiards before it, poker has moved out from under the seedier side of its roots and is flowering in the sunshine.

Maybe you’ve never played poker before and you don’t even know what a full house is. Poker For Dummies covers the basics. Or perhaps you've played for years, but you just don’t know how to win. This handy guide will help you walk away from the poker table with winnings, not lint, in your pockets. If you’re a poker expert, you still can benefit – some of the suggestions may surprise you, and you can certainly learn from the anecdotes from professional players like T.J. Cloutier and Stu Unger.

Know what it takes to start winning hand after hand by exploring strategy; getting to know antes and betting structure; knowing your opponents, and understanding the odds. Poker For Dummies also covers the following topics and more:

* Poker games such as Seven-Card Stud, Omaha, and Texas Hold'em
* Setting up a game at home
* Playing in a casino: Do's and don'ts
* Improving your play with Internet and video poker
* Deciphering poker sayings and slang
* Ten ways to read your opponent's body language
* Playing in poker tournaments
* Money management and recordkeeping
* Knowing when and how to bluff

Poker looks like such a simple game. Anyone, it seems, can play it well – but that's far from the truth. Learning the rules can be quick work, but becoming a winning player takes considerably longer. Still, anyone willing to make the effort can become a good player. You can succeed in poker the way you succeed in life: by facing it squarely, getting up earlier than the next person, and working harder and smarter than the competition.

Foreword by Chris Moneymaker, 2003 World Series of Poker Champion.

Strawberry Days: How Internment Destroyed a Japanese American Community

Strawberry Days: How Internment Destroyed a Japanese American Community
Palgrave Macmillan | 2005 | ISBN: 140396792X | Pages: 288 | PDF | 1.44 MB

The poignant story of a Japanese American community torn apart by racism and WWII internment Strawberry Days tells the vivid and moving tale of the creation and destruction of a Japanese immigrant community. Before World War II, Bellevue, the now-booming 'edge city' on the outskirts of Seattle, was a prosperous farm town renowned for its strawberries. Many of its farmers were recent Japanese immigrants who, despite being rejected by white society, were able to make a living cultivating the rich soil. Yet the lives they created for themselves through years of hard work vanished almost instantly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. David Neiwert combines compelling storytelling with firsthand interviews and newly uncovered documents to weave together the history of this community and the racist schemes that prevented the immigrants from reclaiming their land after the war. Ultimately, Strawberry Daysrepresents more than one community's story, reminding us that bigotry's roots are deeply ingrained in the very fiber of American society.
