Games For Windows March 2008
PDF | English | 18 MB

Games for Windows: The Official Magazine is a monthly computer game magazine published by Ziff Davis Media and the Microsoft Corporation. It is the successor to Computer Gaming World. The publication date of its first issue was released in November 2006. According to Ziff Davis, the magazine is to be a "rebirth" of the Computer Gaming World magazine, which has lost news stand presence over the past few years [2]. Furthermore, according to the editorial staff of CGW/GFW, the magazine will essentially remain unchanged and is in no way subject to Microsoft's influence, something reflected in the language of the legal agreement between Ziff Davis and Microsoft (akin to how the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine's (OPM) content was not influenced by Sony in any way, outside of what's in the demo discs).

Electronic Gaming Monthly (often abbreviated to EGM) is an American video game magazine. It is published by Ziff-Davis as part of the 1UP Network and releases 12 issues a year (and an occasional extra "13th" issue for the Christmas season, also known as the "Smarch" issue, a reference to an episode of The Simpsons). EGM concentrates on news regarding current video game consoles (see magazine content for detailed information). The December 2006 issue introduces new sections, expanded reviews, and focuses more on the acronym of the magazine's title in a redesign. This is the first issue redesign since June 2003. EGM has said that the reason for the design shift is to keep more in line with the site layout of their website

The MIT Encyclopedia of Communication Disorders (Bradford Books)

The MIT Encyclopedia of Communication Disorders
The MIT Press | 2003-10-01 | ISBN: 0262112787 | 630 pages | PDF | 7,5 MB

A massive reference work on the scale of MITECS (The MIT Encyclopedia of Cognitive Sciences), The MIT Encyclopedia of Communication Disorders will become the standard reference in this field for both research and clinical use. It offers almost 200 detailed entries, covering the entire range of communication and speech disorders in children and adults, from basic science to clinical diagnosis.

MITECD is divided into four sections that reflect the standard categories within the field (also known as speech-language pathology and audiology): Voice, Speech, Language, and Hearing. Within each category, entries are organized into three subsections: Basic Science, Disorders, and Clinical Management. Basic Science includes relevant information on normal anatomy and physiology, physics, psychology and psychophysics, and linguistics; this provides a scientific foundation for entries in the other subsections. The entries that appear under Disorders offer information on the definition and characterization of specific disorders, and tools for their identification and assessment. The Clinical Management subsection describes appropriate interventions, including behavioral, pharmacological, surgical, and prosthetic.
Because the approach to communication disorders can be quite different for children and adults, many topics include separate entries reflecting this. Although some disorders that are first diagnosed in childhood may persist in some form throughout adulthood, many disorders can have an onset in either childhood or adulthood, and the timing of onset can have many implications for both assessment and intervention.
Topics covered in MITECD include cochlear implants for children and adults, pitch perception, tinnitus, alaryngeal voice and speech rehabilitation, neural mechanisms of vocalization, holistic voice therapy techniques, computer-based approaches to children?s speech and language disorders, neurogenic mutism, regional dialect, agrammatism, global aphasia, and psychosocial problems associated with communicative disorders.

Local Models for Spatial Analysis

Local Models for Spatial Analysis
CRC | 2006-10-25 | ISBN: 0415316812 | 244 pages | PDF | 8 MB

In both the physical and social sciences, there are now available large spatial data sets with detailed local information. Global models for analyzing these data are not suitable for investigating local variations; consequently, local models are the subject of much recent research. Collecting a variety of models into a single reference, Local Models for Spatial Analysis explains in detail a variety of approaches for analyzing univariate and multivariate spatial data.

Different models make use of data in unique ways, and this book offers perspectives on various definitions of what constitutes local, varying spatial scales, and nonstationary models. The author discusses analyses of single variables on grids, multiple variables, deterministic approaches to spatial prediction, geostatistical prediction, and point patterns. He uses numerous worked examples, illustrations, and case studies to shed light on issues involved in implementing the concepts in practice, and makes use of physical and social science data sets. In each chapter, the book follows a consistent format that introduces global approaches followed by corresponding local approaches, providing an assessment of the suitability of various methods in particular situations.
Combining a valuable array of tools for GIScience and GISystems, Local Models for Spatial Analysis guides you in selecting and applying the most appropriate model for a given purpose and set of data.

Enjoy this great book!

Mario Puzo, «The Godfather»

Mario Puzo, «The Godfather»
Signet | ISBN 0451167716 | October 5, 2004 | PDF | 1,9 MB | 448 Pages

"The Godfather is the story of organized crime in the 1940's which revolves around the Corleone family. Don Vito Corleone is the head of a New York Mafia "family". Problems arise when a gangster supported by another Mafia family, Solozzo, announces his intentions to start selling drugs all over New York. Don Vito hates the idea of drugs as he is quite happy with his hotel and gambling business. Don is shot by Solozzo's men. Solozzo then kidnaps one of Don's advisors, Tom Hagen and tries to make him force Don's eldest son, Sonny to agree to sell drugs, but the plan goes wrong when Sollozzo finds out that Don Corleone is still alive."

"Late in 1945, army veteran Michael Corleone brings his fiancee Kay Adams to meet his family on his sister's wedding day. His family, however, is a little different from most families.

His father is Don Vito Corleone, a powerful Mafia boss known as "the Godfather." His brothers Sonny and Fredo are soldiers in the organization and Sonny is the most feared enforcer in New York. His adopted brother Tom Hagen is the lawyer who handles the financial details of the family business. Scattered around the wedding reception are such luminaries as legendary hit man Luca Brasi, world-famous singer Johnny Fontane, and Mafia capo Dominic Clemenza.

After the reception, Don Vito, Sonny, and Tom, meet with Virgil Sollozzo, a drug smuggler who wants them to become partners in his business. Though Sollozzo offers attractive terms, Don Vito declines the offer.

When, a few days later, the Don is cut-down and seriously wounded by a pair of assassins, the violent Sonny is tapped to take the reigns of the family and vows to avenge his father.

In the midst of the resultant gang-war, "college-boy" Michael volunteers to kill Sollozzo and Captain McCluskey, his police protection. Meeting with the two in a small restaurant, Michael slays them both with a hidden pistol.

While Michael heads to exile in Sicily, Sonny continues the gang-war, now battling both the other five New York families and the police. When Sonny dies in a hail of gunfire, Don Vito returns from his convalescence to forge a new peace with the other families and even manages to arrange for someone else to be convicted of the murders Michael committed, allowing his youngest son to come home.

When the Don is finally felled by a heart attack and Fredo is sent to consolidate the family's power in Las Vegas, Michael is called upon to take control of the family business and take revenge on his enemies."

Symmetry Rules: How Science and Nature Are Founded on Symmetry

Joseph Rosen “Symmetry Rules: How Science and Nature Are Founded on Symmetry"
Springer | 2008-04-01 | ISBN:3540759727 | PDF | 319 pages | 2 Mb

When we use science to describe and understand the world around us, we are in essence grasping nature through symmetry. In fact, modern theoretical physics suggests that symmetry is a, if not the, foundational principle of nature. Emphasizing the concepts, this book leads the reader coherently and comprehensively into the fertile field of symmetry and its applications. Among the most important applications considered are the fundamental forces of nature and the Universe. It is shown that the Universe cannot possess exact symmetry, which is a principle of fundamental significance. Curie's principle - which states that the symmetry of the effect is at least that of the cause - features prominently. An introduction to group theory, the mathematical language of symmetry, is included. This book will convince all interested readers of the importance of symmetry in science. Furthermore, it will serve as valuable background reading for all students in the physical sciences.

Sociolinguistic Variation: Theories, Methods, and Applications

Robert Bayley, Ceil Lucas "Sociolinguistic Variation: Theories, Methods, and Applications"
Cambridge University Press; 1 edition (November 19, 2007) | ISBN:0521691818 | PDF | 422 pages | 1,7 Mb

Why does human language vary from one person, or one group, to another? In what ways does it vary? How do linguists go about studying variation in, say, the sound system or the sentence structure of a particular language? Why is the study of language variation important outside the academic world, in say education, the law, employment or housing? This book provides an overview of these questions, bringing together a team of experts to survey key areas within the study of language variation and language change. Covering both the range of methods used to research variation in language, and the applications of such research to a variety of social contexts, it is essential reading for advanced students and researchers in sociolinguistics, communication, linguistic anthropology and applied linguistics.

Hans G. Wallraff "Avian Navigation: Pigeon Homing as a Paradigm"
Springer | ISBN:3540223851 | 2005-01-12 | 229 Pages | PDF | 3 Mb

How migratory birds can navigate home from their wintering grounds to their breeding sites over hundreds and thousands of kilometres has been an admired mystery over more than a century. Profound advances towards a solution of this problem have been achieved with a model bird, the homing pigeon. This monograph summarizes our current knowledge about pigeon homing, about the birds' application of a sun compass and a magnetic compass, of a visual topographical map within a familiar area and -- most surprisingly -- of an olfactory map using atmospheric chemosignals as indicators of position in distant unfamiliar areas.

Stephen King - Carrie - Audiobook

Stephen King - Carrie - Audiobook
Read by Sissy Spacek | MP3 | 24kbpss | 7:30 hrs | ISBN:0743536983 | 58 Mb
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio | Unabridged edition (February 7, 2005)

Stephen King's first published novel offers a warning to bullies in the person of Carrie White, a high school misfit who wreaks her revenge in a now-famous prom scene. While the story is no less fresh today than it was in 1974, this audio edition promises a brand-new introduction from the author. he story is narrated by Sissy Spacek, who played the title role in the movie. While Spacek perfectly understands the protagonist and amply projects both her hopes and misery, this listener found it unsettling to hear a story about Maine natives in a Maine town read in a clear Texas drawl. Spacek's consistency and acting ability somewhat make up for this incongruity, but King's "Mainiacs" still sound more performed than real.

Robert Ludlum's The Altman Code: A Covert-One Novel - Audiobook

Robert Ludlum's The Altman Code: A Covert-One Novel - Audiobook
Read by Don Leslie | MP3 | ISBN:1559278986s | 51 Mb | 6 hrs | 24kbps
Publisher: Macmillan Audio | Abridged edition (June 17, 2003)

This latest product from the efficient assembly line of the Ludlum thriller factory has been somewhat overtaken by events: it revolves around a Chinese freighter carrying weapons-grade chemicals to the port of Basra in Saddam Hussein's Iraq. There are also a couple of neat subplots, including an elderly American being held prisoner in China who claims to be the real father of U.S. President Sam Adams Castilla, and the dirty doings of a giant international business combine called the Altman Group, whose members make Ian Fleming's old adversaries look like the operatives of a corner candy store. All of this provides plenty of action and intrigue for the folks at Covert-One, the top-secret agency which now operates out of a private yacht club in Anacostia, Md.-close enough to the White House for President Castilla to drop in on agency boss Fred Klein of an evening with just one Lincoln Town Car full of Secret Service folk. Most of the heavy lifting, actionwise, falls on the capable shoulders of Covert-One's Col. Jon Smith, who as "a medical doctor and biomolecular scientist" as well as an army officer is the ideal combination of brains and muscle. He needs both, as well as the patience to endure dialogue like this from Castilla: "I don't know whether you realize it, but China is one of the signatories of the international agreement that prohibits development, production, stockpiling, or use of chemical weapons. They won't let themselves be revealed as breaking that treaty, because it could slow their march to acquiring a bigger and bigger slice of the global economy." Exactly.

Tom Clancy- The Bear & the Dragon Audiobook

Tom Clancy- The Bear & the Dragon Audiobook
Read by Frank Muller | MP3 | 24kbpss | ISBN:0375415831 | 46 Mb | 6 hrs
Publisher: Random House Audio | Abridged edition (September 12, 2000)

Tom Clancy- The Bear & the Dragon Audio book- Power is delightful, and absolute power should be absolutely delightful--but not when you're the most powerful man on earth and the place is ticking like a time bomb. Jack Ryan, CIA warrior turned U.S. president, is the man in the hot seat, and in this vast thriller he's up to his nostrils in crazed Asian warlords, Russian thugs, nukes that won't stay put, and authentic, up-to-the-nanosecond technology as complex as the characters' motives are simple. Quick, do you know how to reprogram the software in an Aegis missile seekerhead? Well, if you're Jack Ryan, you'd better find someone who does, or an incoming ballistic may rain fallout on your parade. Bad for reelection prospects. "You know, I don't really like this job very much," Ryan complains to his aide Arnie van Damm, who replies, "Ain't supposed to be fun, Jack."
But you bet The Bear and the Dragon is fun--over 1,000 swift pages' worth. In the opening scene, a hand-launched RPG rocket nearly blows up Russia's intelligence chief in his armored Mercedes, and Ryan's clever spooks report that the guy who got the rocket in his face instead was the hoodlum "Rasputin" Avseyenko, who used to run the KGB's "Sparrow School" of female prostitute spies. Soon after, two apparent assassins are found handcuffed together afloat in St. Petersburg's Neva River, their bloated faces resembling Pokémon toys.

The stakes go higher as the mystery deepens: oil and gold are discovered in huge quantities in Siberia, and the evil Chinese Minister Without Portfolio Zhang Han San gazes northward with lust. The laid-off elite of the Soviet Army figure in the brewing troubles, as do the new generation of Tiananmen Square dissidents, Zhang's wily, Danielle Steel-addicted executive secretary Lian Ming, and Chester Nomuri, a hip, Internet-porn-addicted CIA agent posing in China as a Japanese computer salesman. He e-mails his CIA boss, Mary Pat "the Cowgirl" Foley, that he intends to seduce Ming with Dream Angels perfume and scarlet Victoria's Secret lingerie ordered from the catalog--strictly for God and country, of course. Soon Ming is calling him "Master Sausage" instead of "Comrade," but can anybody master Ming?

The plot is over the top, with devastating subplots erupting all over the globe and lurid characters scaring the wits out of each other every few pages, but Clancy finds time to insert hard-boiled little lessons on the vileness of Communism, the infuriating intrusions of the press on presidential power, the sexual perversions of Mao, the poor quality of Russian pistol silencers ("garbage, cans loaded with steel wool that self-destructed after less than ten shots"), the folly of cutting a man's throat with a knife ("they flop around and make noise when you do that"), and similar topics. Naturally, the book bristles like a battlefield with intriguingly intricate military hardware.

A Dressing Method in Mathematical Physics

Evgeny V. Doktorov, Sergey B. Leble "A Dressing Method in Mathematical Physics"
Springer | 2007-07-11 | ISBN:1402061382 | PDF | 386 pages | 4,4 Mb

This monograph systematically develops and considers the so-called "dressing method" for solving differential equations (both linear and nonlinear), a means to generate new non-trivial solutions for a given equation from the (perhaps trivial) solution of the same or related equation. The primary topics of the dressing method covered here are: the Moutard and Darboux transformations discovered in XIX century as applied to linear equations; the Bäcklund transformation in differential geometry of surfaces; the factorization method; and the Riemann-Hilbert problem in the form proposed by Shabat and Zakharov for soliton equations, plus its extension in terms of the d-bar formalism.
Throughout, the text exploits the linear experience of presentation, with special attention given to the algebraic aspects of the main mathematical constructions and to practical rules of obtaining new solutions. Various linear equations of classical and quantum mechanics are solved by the Darboux and factorization methods. An extension of the classical Darboux transformations to nonlinear equations in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions, as well as its factorization, are also discussed in detail. Whats more, the applicability of the local and non-local Riemann-Hilbert problem-based approach and its generalization in terms of the d-bar method are illustrated via various nonlinear equations.

Flavours and Fragrances: Chemistry, Bioprocessing and Sustainability

Flavours and Fragrances: Chemistry, Bioprocessing and Sustainability
Springer | ISBN: 3540493387 | 2007-03-28 | PDF | 648 pages | 15.1 Mb | RS

This book is an introduction to the fascinating world of aroma chemicals, essential oils, fragrances and flavour compositions for the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry. The present state-of-the-art technology, the future use of resources and biotechnological approaches for the production of the respective chemical compounds are described. A large section is devoted to the description of the renewable resources of flavours: spice plants, fruits from moderate to tropical climates, vegetables, fermented and heated plants. Analytical methods, such as gas chromatography coupled to human or electronic noses or to a mass spectrometer, are outlined and consumer trends, legal and safety aspects are described. Novel renewable resources come from biotechnology. Enzymes, for example, bio-transform cheap substrates to produce flavours de novo; plant cells in culture may serve as a rich resource of genes coding for metabolic activities in transgenic producers. The book will be of great interest to scientists and engineers in the food, flavour, fragrance and pharmaceutical industries and all respective researchers in academia.

Stephen King - Apt Pupil (audiobook)

Stephen King - Apt Pupil (audiobook)

Stephen King - Apt Pupil (audiobook)
Read by Frank Muller | Unabridged | mp3 | 24kbps | 62 Mb | 7 hrs

It doesn't get any better than Frank Muller reading vintage Stephen King! In Apt Pupil, this master of suspense treats his readers to a sinister plot in which a 13-year-old boy, Todd Bowden, becomes completely absorbed by the life and true stories of a former Nazi, Kurt Dussander. When Todd uncovers the identity of a war criminal hiding out in his town, he blackmails Kurt into telling, and reliving, all of the concentration camp horrors so Todd can almost feel what it was like to have been there. The more involved the two become, the deeper and harder it is for Todd to remain the "apt pupil" that he once was. And, of course, the author's (Bag of Bones, Audio Reviews, LJ 12/98) plots always have twists. This audiotape is pure, unadulterated Stephen King; it's "must- have audio" at its best. Highly recommended.

Operation Getafix
PDF | 12.84 MB | English

Asterix and the Big Fight is a 1989 animated movie directed by Philippe Grimond and produced in France by Yannick Piel as Astérix et le coup du menhir. It is based on the Asterix comic book series. The movie has a different plot from the book of the same name. It combines plot elements from Asterix and the Big Fight and Asterix and the Soothsayer. Interestingly, although there is plenty of fighting — as usual for an Asterix story — the actual fight that the story is named for is not part of the movie's plot. The novelization was titled "Operation Getafix" (the German translation of the film was Operation Hinkelstein, a hinkelstein being a menhir).

Asterix and the Falling Sky is the thirty-third volume of the Asterix comic book series, by Albert Uderzo (story and illustrations). It is the newest book, having come out on October 14, 2005 around the world.

The album is explained by Uderzo as a tribute to Walt Disney, who inspired him to become an artist. It is generally disliked by fans, mostly because Asterix albums tend to be classical, and this album has aliens from outer space and a different, far less detailed drawing style.

Uderzo has been adamant this will not be the last Asterix album, saying in a Financial Times interview, "No, no, no, it is not the last. Certain journalists believed this because the cover was the mirror image of the first Asterix album. That is indeed the case but it was not at all my intention to suggest it would be the last album."

Arts With the Brain in Mind

Arts With the Brain in Mind

Product Details

* Paperback: 139 pages

* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0871205149
* ISBN-13: 978-0871205148
* Product Dimensions: 9.6 x 8.1 x 0.4 inches

Book Description
How do the arts stack up as a major discipline? What is their effect on the brain, learning, and human development? How might schools best implement and assess an arts program?? Eric Jensen answers these questions C and more C in this book. To push for higher standards of learning, many policymakers are eliminating arts programs. To Jensen, that's a mistake. This book presents the definitive case, based on what we know about the brain and learning, for making arts a core part of the basic curriculum and thoughtfully integrating them into every subject. Separate chapters address musical, visual, and kinesthetic arts in ways that reveal their influence on learning.

What are the effects of a fully implemented arts program? The evidence points to the following:

$ Fewer dropouts $ Higher attendance $ Better team players $ An increased love of learning $ Greater student dignity $ Enhanced creativity $ A more prepared citizen for the workplace of tomorrow $ Greater cultural awareness as a bonus

To Jensen, it's not a matter of choosing, say, the musical arts over the kinesthetic. Rather, ask what kind of art makes sense for what purposes. How much time per day? What kind of music? Should the arts be required? How do we assess arts programs? In answering these real-world questions, Jensen provides dozens of practical, detailed suggestions for incorporating the arts into every classroom.

Download Description
"How do the arts stack up as a major discipline? What is their effect on the brain, learning, and human development? How might schools best implement and assess an arts program?" Eric Jensen answers these questions--and more--in this book. The evidence points to the following: * Fewer dropouts * Higher attendance * Better team players * An increased love of learning * Greater student dignity * Enhanced creativity * A more prepared citizen for the workplace of tomorrow * Greater cultural awareness as a bonus To Jensen, it's not a matter of choosing, say, the musical arts over the kinesthetic. Rather, ask what kind of art makes sense for what purposes. How much time per day? At what ages? What kind of music? What kind of movement? Should the arts be required? How do we assess arts programs? In answering these real-world questions, Jensen provides dozens of practical, detailed suggestions for incorporating the arts into every classroom.

The Testability of Distributed Real-Time Systems (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science)

The Testability of Distributed Real-Time Systems
(The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science)

Springer; 1 edition | ISBN: 0792393864 | 164 pages | August 31, 1993 | PDF | 6 Mb

The Testability of Distributed Real-Time Systems starts by collecting and analyzing all principal problems, as well as their interrelations that one has to keep in mind wh4en testing a distributed real-time system. The book discusses them in some detail from the viewpoints of software engineering, distributed systems principles, and real-time system development. These problems are organization, observability, reproducibility, the host/target approach, environment simulation, and (test) representativity. Based on this framework, the book summarizes and evaluates the current work done in this area before going on to argue that the particular system architecture (hardware plus operating system) has a much greater influence on testing than is the case for `ordinary', non-real-time software. The notions of event-triggered and time-triggered system architectures are introduced, and its is shown that time-triggered systems `automatically' (i.e. by the nature of their system architecture) solve or greatly ease solving of some of the problems introduced earlier, i.e. observability, reproducibility, and (partly) representativity. A test methodology is derived for the time-triggered, distributed real-time system MARS. The book describes in detail how the author has taken advantage of its architecture, and shows how the remaining problems can be solved for this particular system architecture. Some experiments conducted to evaluate this test methodology are reported, including the experience gained from them, leading to a description of a number of prototype support tools. The Testability of Distributed Real-Time Systems can be used by both academic and industrial researchers interested in distributed and/or real-time systems, or in software engineering for such systems. This book can also be used as a text in advanced courses on distributed or real-time systems.

Neural Preprocessing and Control of Reactive Walking Machines: Towards Versatile Artificial Perception-Action Systems

Neural Preprocessing and Control of Reactive Walking Machines: Towards Versatile Artificial Perception-Action Systems (Cognitive Technologies)
Springer; 1 edition | ISBN: 3540688021 | 188 pages | June 27, 2007 | PDF | 6 Mb

This book presents biologically inspired walking machines interacting with their physical environment. It describes how the designs of the morphology and the behavior control of walking machines can benefit from biological studies. The purpose of this book is to develop a modular structure of neural control generating different reactive behaviors of the physical walking machines, to analyze the neural mechanisms underlying the reactive behaviors, and to demonstrate the sensor fusion technique leading to smooth switching between appropriate behaviors, like obstacle avoidance and sound tropism.

The author offers an example of artificial perception-action systems and emphasizes the close relationship between biological studies, computational neuroscience and engineering. The book will be of interest to researchers, engineers and students in the fields of robotics, biologically inspired mechatronics, electronics engineering, control, and artificial intelligence.

Gsm and Personal Communications Handbook (Artech House Mobile Communications Library)

Gsm and Personal Communications Handbook (Artech House Mobile Communications Library)
Artech House Publishers | ISBN: 0890069573 | 526 pages | May 1998 | PDF | 2 Mb

Here is the most comprehensive reference available on GSM applications and services that?s intended to build on -- not replace -- the basic technical information in the authors? original bestseller, An Introduction to GSM. The book provides a close-up look at this hot technology, offers in-depth discussions of the features and services available through GSM, and includes new and more in-depth coverage of applications and implementations of the GSM standard. It also explains how GSM has succeeded in becoming the major digital wireless standard -- and addresses both past and future standardization, regulation, and development issues. The book uses non-technical language and unique technical implementation and performance figures to: show how intelligent mobile networks function -- and what benefits they provide to users, compare PCS to GSM and other competing digital radio systems, examine the technology and techniques used in PCS handsets. The book is an up-to-date, single-source guide for engineers, technical managers, and consultants at communications manufacturing and network operating sites who need a technical background on services, features, and implementation -- or information on the adoption of GSM and competitive technologies. It is also a valuable source for marketing and sales professionals, university lecturers, and post-graduate students who need to acquire background knowledge of GSM technology or services.

Bob Woodward - Bush at War

Bob Woodward - Bush at War
Simon & Schuster (November 19, 2002) | ISBN: 0743204735 | Edition - 2002 | PDF | 1.3 MB

Much of the book recounts events in meetings of the National Security Council (NSC), with the major players in the story, aside from the President, being Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, George Tenet and Condoleezza Rice. Woodward examined notes from such NSC meetings and also interviewed administration officials including President Bush.

Woodward especially focuses on the administration's decision to go to war in Afghanistan and its strategic and tactical decisions in that vein. As one of the first detailed accounts of these decisions, prior to inside accounts like Richard A. Clarke's Against All Enemies, Woodward's book was widely acclaimed, getting praise from The Times and other major papers. The book was criticized by Michael Scheuer, former CIA chief of the Bin Laden station, in his book Imperial Hubris for offering a platform for government leaks, which he deemed harmful to national security: “After reading Mr. Woodward’s Bush at War, it seems to me that the U.S. officials who either approved or participated in passing the information—in documents and via interviews—that is the heart of Mr. Woodward’s book, gave an untold measure of aid and comfort to the enemy.”

The Big Book of Urban Legends (The Big book Series)

The Big Book of Urban Legends (The Big book Series)
223 pages | Other (January 1, 1995) | English | ISBN: 1563891654 | 118mb

Urban legends--those apocryphal, happened-to-a-friend-of-a-friend stories of such outlandish incidents as "the microwaved pet" and "alligators in the sewer"--are inherently fun, but they've never been as entertainingly presented as in this collection of some 200 told in comic strip format by a stunning variety of artists drawn from the comics mainstream (e.g., Howard Chaykin, Keith Giffen, Dick Giordano), underground (e.g., Tina Robbins, Justin Green, Shary Flenniken), and everywhere in between. Although the contributors' work is of uniformly high quality, some of them relate the tales in realistic, deadpan fashion, whereas others take a cartoony approach that exaggerates the already outlandish nature of the yarns. An introduction and commentary by urban folklore scholar and entrepreneur Jan Harold Brunvand (The Vanishing Hitchhiker [1981] et seq.) legitimizes the project, but as Brunvand points out, comics are just another manifestation of the same popular culture that spawned the legends in the first place. All told, the big paperback is a promising, affordable launching of DC Comics' new Paradox Press imprint. Gordon Flagg

Google Web Toolkit is an open source Java development framework for building Ajax-enabled web applications. Instead of the hodgepodge of technologies that developers typically use for Ajax-JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and XMLHttpRequest-GWT lets developers implement rich client applications with pure Java, using familiar idioms from the AWT, Swing, and SWT. GWT goes beyond most Ajax frameworks by making it easy to build desktop-like applications that run in the ubiquitous browser, where the richness of the user interface is limited only by the developer’s imagination.

Springer | 2008-02 | ISBN:3540714480 | 283 pages | PDF | 3,8 Mb

For the majority of industrial companies, customizing products and services is among the most critical means to deliver true customer value and achieve superior competitive advantage. The challenge is not to customize products and services in itself but to do it in a profitable way. The implementation of a product configuration system is among the most powerful ways of achieving this in practice, offering a reduction of the lead time for products and quotations, faster and more qualified responses to customer inquiries, fewer transfers of responsibility and fewer specification mistakes, a reduction of the resources spent for the specification of customized products, and the possibility of optimizing the products according to customer demands.

This book presents an operational procedure for the design of product configuration systems in industrial companies, based on the experience gained from more than 40 product configuration projects in companies providing customer tailored products and services.

Active Sensor Planning for Multiview Vision Tasks

S.Y. Shengyong Chen, Li Youfu, Jianwei Zhang, Wanliang Wang “Active Sensor Planning for Multiview Vision Tasks "
Springer | 2008-03-01 | ISBN:3540770712 | 266 pages | PDF | 7,3 Mb

An active robot system can change its visual parameters in an intentional manner and perform its sensing actions purposefully. A general vision task thus can be performed in an efficient way by means of strategic control of the perception process. The controllable processes include 3D active sensing, sensor configuration and recalibration, automatic sensor placement, and 3D sensing. This book explores these important issues in studying for active visual perception.
Vision sensors have limited fields of views and can only "see" a portion of a scene from a single viewpoint. To make the entire object visible, the sensor has to be moved from one place to another around the object to observe all features of interest. The sensor planning presented in this book describes an effective strategy to generate a sequence of viewing poses and sensor settings for optimally completing a perception task. Several methods are proposed to solve the problems in both model-based and nonmodel-based vision tasks. For model-based applications, the method involves determination of the optimal sensor placements and a shortest path through these viewpoints for automatic generation of a perception plan. A topology of viewpoints is achieved by a genetic algorithm in which a min-max criterion is used for evaluation. A shortest path is also determined by graph algorithms. For nonmodel-based applications, the method involves determination of the best next view and sensor settings. The trend surface is proposed as the cue to predict the unknown portion of an object or environment.
The 11 chapters in Active Vision Planning draw on recent work in robot vision over ten years, particularly in the use of new concepts of active sensing, reconfiguration, recalibration, sensor model, sensing constraints, sensing evaluation, viewpoint decision, sensor placement graph, model based planning, path planning, planning for robot in unknown environment, dynamic 3D construction, surface prediction, etc. Implementation examples are also provided with theoretical methods for testing in a real robot system. With these optimal sensor planning strategies, this book will give the robot vision system the adaptability needed in many practical applications.

Atlas of Urogynecological Endoscopy
Publisher: Informa Healthcare | English | ISBN:184184540X | 208 pages | Data: 2007 | PDF | 18 Mb

Description: The study of gynecology and pelvic floor disorders is a rapidly developing area for gynecologists around the world, and, moreover, an essential aspect to the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders is a need for expertise in cystourethroscopy to accurately diagnose conditions of the lower urinary tract that frequently present to the gynecologists. However, gynecologists have little training or expertise in the use of cystourethroscopy and therefore often do not feel comfortable in performing this procedure or distinguishing what is normal from what is abnormal. An excellent guide for educating gynecologists in endoscopy of the urinary tract, this highly illustrated text addresses this need and provides readers with a full understanding of the equipment that is used, how it is used, and the conditions of the lower urinary tract they may find in the treatment of pelvic disorders.

The Erotic Word: Sexuality, Spirituality, and the Bible

The Erotic Word: Sexuality, Spirituality, and the Bible
Oxford University Press | February 24, 2005 | ISBN: 0195156528 | 223 pages | PDF | 11 MB

Humans, the Bible tells us, both male and female, were created in God's image, and eros--a fundamental longing for connection that finds abstract good in the pleasure we derive from the stimulation of the senses--is a central component of that image. The Bible, particularly the Hebrew Bible, affirms erotic passion, both eros between humans and eros between God and humans. In a sweeping examination of the sexual rules of the Bible, Carr asserts that Biblical "family values" are a far cry from anything promoted as such in contemporary politics. He concludes that passionate love--our preoccupaton therewith and pursuit thereof--is the primary human vocation, that eros is in fact the flavoring of life.

Macworld (US) March 2008

macworld

Macworld (US) March 2008
PDF | English | 19 MB

Macworld is a web site and monthly computer magazine dedicated to Apple Macintosh products. It is published by Mac Publishing, which is headquartered in San Francisco, California. Published since 1984, the magazine has the largest audited circulation (both total and newsstand) of Macintosh-focused magazines in North America, more than double its nearest competitor, Mac|Life (formerly MacAddict). Macworld was founded by David Bunnell (publisher) and Andrew Fluegelman (editor). In 1997, the publication was renamed to Macworld, incorporating MacUser (a name reflected subtly on the magazine's Table of Contents page) to reflect the consolidation of the Ziff-Davis-owned MacUser magazine into the International Data Group-owned Macworld within the new Mac Publishing joint venture between the two publishers. In 1999, the combined company also purchased the online publication MacCentral Online, because Macworld didn't have a powerful online news component at the time. In late 2001 International Data Group (IDG) bought out Ziff-Davis' share of Mac Publishing, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of IDG.
